Mario and I kind of forgot about SacAnime until two weeks ago. When we remembered, and realized it was so close, we needed a cosplay that would be quick and easy, and not so harsh on the pocketbook, since we are still elbow deep in our Blizzcon costumes. After much consideration and searching through the internet, we decided that yes! We would be Team Rocket grunts. Not that hard, right?
Finding all of the parts was the hardest part. We went to several stores in the area and were only able to find the hats, nothing more. It took a few hours of searching online to find the rest of the materials.
Now, when I say ‘easy, quick costume’, I mean you don’t have to sew anything. All of your pieces are already made, and the most you have to do is paint. This is good for a quick Halloween costume, or if you want something quick and relatively cheap and easy to do. It cost us around $70 for all the materials per costume (we made three!).
I figured since it took me so long to find all the materials online, I’d go ahead and post here where I got my stuff… of course, in the future they might not be available, but I’ll try to keep this updated. If you can’t find these hats, boots, gloves, belts, skirt or black turtleneck, then here you go!
Depending on the season, you might want to check your local department stores before you go buying things online- shipping can be a pain sometimes. If you can’t find some of the pieces, though, here are some links that are hopefully helpful!
For the guys’ boots, we used these, and painted them gray. Originally we had said to paint the boots, but we ran into a problem with the paint flaking off if you bend your foot/ankle a lot while walking. This varies from person to person we found, because the paint flaked for Mario where he was bending the boot while walking, but not for our other friend who wore it. You might be able to find a good paint that won’t flake and will adhere to the leather, or you could even get some leather dye (probably the best bet, actually) from Tandy and dye the boots that way. For my boots, I found these, and since they were already the perfect color, we didn’t have to bother with them.
For the turtlenecks, since it’s just now starting to be fall (and in California, so I don’t even know if I’ll find turtlenecks in the stores anyway) the only place online I found them at a reasonable price was at Cabelas, but Amazon has a lot of turtlenecks right now. We had trouble finding ours four years ago (updating this in 2014), so apparently turtlenecks are more in style now?
For the big R, we decided to do red instead of orange (since it’s always been red, I guess) and just got a blank stencil sheet, printed out a big R with our printer, and traced it onto the stencil sheet. Cut it out, leave some lines of plastic so that the R continues to look like an R, and tape it to your shirt and paint away. We used a white paint base on the shirts since they’re black. Note: you can also buy iron on printer sheets, print out a big red R (remember to size it out on regular paper first) then cut it out and iron it on. This is just a bit more expensive than the stencil sheet, but not much more.
I found the skirt here, but it looks like the exact one that I got isn’t available on the site anymore. They have plenty of other black skirts, though. Thrift stores are also good to check out, for any of the clothing items, really.
Black slacks you can literally find anywhere, at any department store, or even a thrift store. The boys already had some laying around.
We found the belts here, but again, it looks like the exact ones we got are already sold out. Here’s another place I found with similar belts. If they’re sold out as well, try googling ‘gray canvas belt’ as Yannie says in her comment below, and you should find several.
The gloves can be found here ( I love this site for their wide range of colors!) and we found our Pokeballs at ToysRUs, but you can probably find them online pretty easily as well. We’re clipping one to our belt, and holding one.
We decided not to put the orange on the belt, and just keep it as is so that we could keep a kind of military look to the costume.
And lastly, the hats!
(Oh, and if you want to stick with the pink hair, here are several wigs that would work for boys or girls (since there are boy cut ones) and they come in two different bright shades of pink!)
Some variations that I’ve seen of the costumes include wearing black pleather pants instead of a mini skirt, which honestly looked amazing and is something I’m going to do in the future for a con since I’ll be sitting at a table in artist’s alley all day and really don’t want to do so with a mini skirt on.
Hopefully that was helpful, and there will be many pictures to come tomorrow!
If any of the links don’t work anymore, please leave a comment to let me know, and I’ll find another similar piece for the costume!
Whoever made this, you are awesome. I had no idea where to get good boots or gloves and you gave me 2 perfect sites to get them from. The belt im still looking for but shouldn’t be hard. I found a hat i thot would work at spencers but the one you show me is even better and cheaper! Now i need to return the hat. Hopefully they will take it back :P Also i did the lazy thing and bought a team rocket shirt from sanshee http://sanshee.com/shirts/Team-Rocket-Male Ill probly go with the shirt you did aswell at some point but not any time soon cause i already got the shirt. Thanks for this its an awesome guide!
Haha, thanks :) I actually meant to edit this, we had a bit of a problem with the boots and the paint flaking off, even with a good primer. If you don’t bend your ankle and foot a lot when you walk (Mario does, but his friend who wore the costume as well had no problems with the boots so he doesn’t) then the paint should be fine; if not, I actually recommend finding some matte gray tape to layer over the boot to prevent the color from coming off. Or, you can probably mix some black and white dye from Tandy leather factory to get the right gray.
Also for the orange part of the belt a cheap way to do it is buy some neon orange duct tape. I know its supposed it stick out a bit but its an idea. http://www.amazon.com/Colored-1-88-Inch-Orange-Yards-868090/dp/B001H9NX2A Im not sure where to get only 1 (the link is for 6) but look around im sure you’d find someplace.
Thanks for the comprehensive run-down on the costume elements! I couldn’t figure out what the hat type was, now I know it’s a newsboy cap. I’ll be doing the traditional Rocket Grunt costume, with stark white accessories instead of gray. Already got gloves & boots, just need the belt & a proper hat, & I’m good to go! Might sew a Zubat or other plushie, too.
With Anime Detour about 2 weeks away, I had to do something fast. A lot of things worked for this costume, some didn’t. All the accessories worked great. I couldn’t find a belt on the website mentioned, but I googled Gray canvas belt, and a black gray belt the military uses with a silver colored clip came up which worked fine. I actually ended up having my gloves tucked under my shirt and pants tucked over my boots. We also used a felt “R” and hot glue gun for the shirt. Worked great.
Now the boots. The boots were easily the hardest part of the outfit. After ordering and getting them in the mail, we started searching around town for some kind of leather dye. Since the website was out. Our search finally led us to a small shoe repair shop that said he had to order the special dye. The dye, “Called Nu life” Arrived one day before the con, and I just barely had time to spray it and let it dry before they had to go on.
The only hard part of this boot is the soles, meaning that everytime you step, something is going to be bending on the boot. This caused the dye I had (Which was actually more like spray on paint) to chip off along the lines that the boot bent at. This caused my boot to look horrible by day 3. If you’re going to do this, make sure you have extra dye by the time you’re planning to use the boots.
I’ll have to find another link for the belt then, and I’m glad you found a leather dye for the boots, we had a heck of a time keeping paint on Mario’s. It looks like the spray you found lasted longer than our paint job did on ours, but we still haven’t been able to find a solid solution that won’t crack. Did you prep the vinyl before you painted it? That may have been why it cracked.
You just helped me put together my Halloween costume for this year. Thanks a lot!
I somewhat followed some of this tutorial for my cosplay here
I used the Hat, Belt, and gloves mentioned here.
I had a little issue finding boots for it, so I had some boot covers made.
Unfortunately, the color of the boots didn’t match up with the gloves colors since they were from 2 different places >.<
Sorry to hear the grays didn’t match :( Maybe for future cosplays you can take the gloves to the fabric store to color match the gray and make new covers?
Well my problem with that was, That I hadn’t received the gloves yet in the mail before getting the boot covers made…
Oh well, I like my cosplay ^.^
Yea, I’ll make sure that I’ll have the stuff better prepared for my next cosplay…
I have an entire year until next NebrasKon But that’s only if it is in the same place next year >.<.
Well, we’re really glad our tutorial helped you, and your costume looks awesome!
Greetings! I know this is years later, but can you tell me if the gloves that were from welovecolors.com also fit for a woman? I noticed they were mens, but were one size, so i just wanted to make sure they also fit for a woman. Thanks!
I have used gloves from them and since they’re super stretchy, they do also fit women! The fingers were a little long for me but I have pretty tiny hands, other than that they fit great!
Awesome! Thanks for the fast reply! Will definitely bee getting a couple pairs then. :D
Also, another quick question if you dont mind. I couldn’t check out the boots you had listed for women, for some reason there are no pictures, and any site I find with the same boots do not have photos either. Do you think these will work with the grey color of gloves? Thanks again!
I think those would be just fine with the gloves! I don’t think that the gloves and boots need to be the exact same shade, as long as they are both gray you wouldn’t even notice unless you put them next to each other.
The only question I have is how did you attach the pokeballs to the belt?
There was already a little hole in the back of the pokeballs, so we put a small piece of rope through and tied a knot, and it stuck to the belt!
The boots are no longer available and I can’t find any cheap alternatives. :(
Depending on your shoe size, these could work: https://www.amazon.com/VICCINO-TOP-01-HI-Womens-Slouch-Zipper/dp/B015671C7Q/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1493306772&sr=8-10&keywords=knee+high+flat+boots
Or, you could buy a faux leather pair in any color and paint them with Angelus leather paint in a light gray color: https://angelusdirect.com/collections/paint
I highly recommend the paint, I used it for my Cassandra costume’s boots.
